Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio and its former contract manufacturing partner Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group (JAC) are dissolving their joint venture, Jianglai Advanced Manufacturing Technology (Anhui) Co, as Nio shifts to fully independent vehicle production, as reported by CnEVPost.

According to public records from the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System, Jianglai has filed for dissolution, and a creditor notification period is currently underway from June 10 to July 24. The move marks the official wind-down of a partnership formed in March 2021 to support Nio’s production needs at a time when the company lacked its own manufacturing license.

Jianglai was established with Nio holding a 49% stake and JAC controlling 51%. In 2022, Nio increased its stake to 50%. The venture was primarily responsible for operating Nio’s F1 and F2 plants in Hefei, where vehicles were produced under JAC’s license, a workaround for China’s tight regulatory controls over new vehicle production permits.

The cooperation between Nio and JAC was originally framed as a way to deepen manufacturing collaboration and reduce operational costs. However, in December 2023, Nio obtained its own production qualification and acquired the two Hefei factory assets previously under JAC’s name. Since then, Nio has transitioned to independently manufacturing vehicles, with the JAC brand no longer appearing on its products.

China maintains strict control over the issuance of production licenses to avoid overcapacity in the auto industry. Nio’s reliance on JAC was a strategic necessity during its early manufacturing phase. The company’s acquisition of its own production rights signals a new chapter of operational autonomy.

The dissolution of Jianglai reflects the evolution of Nio’s manufacturing capabilities and a broader trend among China’s leading EV startups to internalize production as they scale. Neither Nio nor JAC has publicly commented on the development.
