Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio has filed an application to register the trademark for “Nio Watch” in China. The application, submitted on December 16, 2022, describes the trademark as a “scientific instrument” and is currently listed as “pending application.”
This move suggests that Nio is planning to expand its offerings to include accessories, and it follows CEO William Li’s statement in July 2021 that the company would be building a new phone model annually, similar to Apple’s strategy. However, it’s also possible that the trademark application is simply to provide legal protection for the brand and the purpose of the Nio Watch is not confirmed.
Nio Mobile Technology Co. Ltd., a company with a registered capital of $100 million, was officially founded in China on August 4, 2021. The company’s operations include the sale of electronic goods, mobile devices, wearable devices, artificial intelligence devices, and communication devices, as well as the development of technology and software.
On November 15, 2022, CEO Li confirmed that the company’s mobile phone business is performing well and that a phone will be released in 2023. He also stated that the decision to enter the mobile phone market was made after a long-term strategic consideration spanning 5-10 years.
