Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Nio has introduced its latest and most sophisticated model, the ET9 flagship, priced at 800,000 yuan (approximately $113,500) in China. Unveiled at the Nio Day 2023 event, the ET9 is positioned as a “smart electric executive flagship” and represents a significant technological leap for the company.
The ET9 showcases Nio’s cutting-edge technology, featuring an in-house developed battery consisting of 46105 large cylindrical cells, a 900-volt electrical architecture supporting 600 kW fast charging, and a unique “SkyRide” intelligent chassis system incorporating steer-by-wire and rear-wheel steering. The vehicle also incorporates the Aquila 2.0 super sensing system with three LiDARs, Nio’s NX9031 5nm ADAS-dedicated chip, and the SkyOS operating system.
In terms of design, the ET9 adopts Nio’s Landjet styling language, presenting a sizable high-riding fastback sedan-crossover hybrid with dimensions measuring 209.6 inches in length, 79.4 inches in width, and 63.4 inches in height, along with a generous wheelbase of almost 128 inches.
Despite its expansive size, the ET9 offers seating for four occupants, arranged in a first-class comfort configuration. Notably, the rear seats feature a maximum backrest adjustment angle of 45 degrees and various amenities, including a “Executive Bridge” with a 360-degree tray table, mini-fridge, and electric sunshade controls. The cabin boasts four large displays, enhancing the overall user experience.
The EV is powered by a 120-kilowatt-hour battery pack with a reported 292 Wh/kg energy density, supporting 5C charging. Nio claims a remarkable 158 miles of range can be added in just 5 minutes, and the battery can be swapped in three minutes at Nio’s Power Swap Stations. The 900V electrical architecture enables ultra-fast charging, with a peak power of 600 kW.
The dual-motor setup delivers 697 horsepower (520 kilowatts) and all-wheel-drive capability, with the front induction motor providing 241 hp (180 kW) and the rear permanent magnet motor producing 456 hp (340 kW).
Nio emphasizes the innovative SkyRide Intelligent Chassis System, incorporating steer-by-wire, rear-wheel steering, and a fully active suspension. This system aims to provide a smooth driving experience even in challenging road conditions.
The ET9’s smart features are powered by the Adam 2.0 super computing platform, featuring Nio’s first 5nm automotive-grade chip for autonomous driving. The SkyOS operating system serves as the user interface, allowing control over various vehicle features.
Preorders for the Nio ET9 are already open in China, with deliveries expected to commence in the first quarter of 2025. The electric flagship will compete with other high-end EVs, including the Porsche Taycan, Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV, HiPhi X, and HiPhi Z.
