Nio marked a significant milestone as the 500,000th production vehicle rolled off the assembly line at its F2 plant at NeoPark in Hefei, Anhui province. The milestone vehicle, an ES8, was celebrated with a ceremony attended by officials from Anhui.

Since 2019, Nio has maintained its position as the leader in the premium battery electric vehicle (BEV) market in China for vehicles priced higher than RMB 300,000 yuan ($41,500), according to the company.

Founded in November 2014, Nio introduced its first production vehicle, the ES8, on December 16, 2017, at Nio Day 2017. The ES8’s initial production vehicle rolled off the assembly line on May 27, 2018, with deliveries commencing in June 2018, totaling 100 units in the first month.

Nio unveiled the new ES8 with 188 upgrades at Nio Day 2019 on December 28, 2019, although it remained based on the first-generation vehicle technology platform, NT 1.0. Transitioning to the latest NT 2.0 platform, Nio launched the new ES8 at Nio Day 2022 on December 24, 2022.

The 500,000th Nio owner, Liu Qingfeng, chairman of Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) firm iFlytek, shared a lighthearted moment at the event. “I watched the gray ES8, fast as a bolt of lightning, overtake my Maybach,” he said, joking about the impressive acceleration of Nio models compared to his luxury car.
