Nikola announced that the Department of Energy’s Energy Loan Program Office (LPO) has invited the Phoenix Hydrogen Hub LLC project loan application to Part II of its application process. The project loan application was submitted on May 26, 2022, and has now progressed through Part I review.
Applications for loan guarantees under an Innovative Clean Energy project application can amount to up to $1.3 billion for a renewable electrolytic hydrogen production facility that can produce up to 150 metric tons of hydrogen per day.
The application process is entirely dependent on the outcome of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) review and evaluation of the Part II Application, and the DOE’s decision to proceed.
Phoenix Hydrogen Hub LLC owns 920 acres of undeveloped land in Maricopa County, Ariz. This is where the facility is planned to be located to support the deployment of the Nikola heavy-duty, zero-emission fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) and hydrogen fueling stations in California and the US Southwest.
The hub is expected to be built in phases to match the demand created from Nikola’s zero emission trucks, starting with 30 metric tons, and growing to 150 metric tons of hydrogen per day, with potential for expansion as demand for clean vehicles. hydrogen in the region expands.
The first phase of construction is expected to be completed in 2024, once the final investment decision and customary regulatory approvals are finalized.
“The center is intended to provide much-needed renewable energy solutions and pathways to a zero-carbon transport sector,” said Nikola President, Energy, Carey Mendes. “What’s more, it is envisioned to support the use of clean hydrogen in additional applications such as industrial, residential, and commercial heating, as well as for natural gas decarbonization and power generation.”
