In the lead-up to the imminent launch of the Tesla Cybertruck, observers have identified a notable alteration in the wheel design of recently built release candidate models. As anticipation grows for the first deliveries of this groundbreaking electric pickup, the spotlight is now on the updated wheel aesthetics that could potentially accompany the vehicle’s debut.
When the prototype of the Cybertruck was initially revealed back in 2019, it sported a distinct set of aero wheel covers. Concealed beneath these covers were 20-inch split spoke rims, allowing future owners the choice to expose them, presumably resulting in a slight compromise in range â akin to the aero covers featured on other vehicles within Tesla’s lineup.

Over the span of time between its unveiling and the present, the configuration of the aero covers and rims has remained largely unchanged, despite glimpses of alternate designs and color schemes. Recent test cars produced at Tesla’s Fremont pilot production line have featured these familiar elements, as have the speculated release candidate Cybertrucks emerging from the Giga Texas facility.

However, as the official launch of the Cybertruck looms on the horizon, a fresh wheel design has come to the forefront. The new design was initially observed on a Cybertruck that had embarked on its journey from Giga Texas, the image of which surfaced on Instagram. In the shared image, the novel wheel design is presented in black, characterized by sturdier spokes with a square motif near the center.
Notably, two plastic trim pieces were also apparent in the photo. Initial conjecture posited these might be integral to the new wheel design, but subsequent analysis suggests otherwise. An additional image surfaced courtesy of Cybertruck enthusiast @greggertruck, featuring a release candidate Cybertruck adorned with the same distinctive wheels, albeit minus the plastic trim pieces.

As expected, the Cybertrucks seen without the aero covers align with Tesla’s standard practice of delivering vehicles with exposed wheels and the aero covers stowed within the vehicle. Although a Cybertruck recently sighted displayed a completely flush aero wheel cover, these instances are likely reserved for testing purposes. It’s probable that the original covers showcased on the prototype will be the ones introduced to the market, particularly in light of Tesla’s recent patent approval for their design.
