According to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), sales of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China reached 6.887 million units in 2022, a 93.4% increase from 2021.

The breakdown of sales by drive type includes 5.365 million battery electric vehicles (+81.6%), 1.518 million plug-in hybrids (+151.6%), and 3,000 fuel cell vehicles (+112.8%). These sales accounted for 25.6% of all vehicle sales in China, and the overall Chinese vehicle market grew by 2.1%.

It’s worth noting that the CAAM figures include commercial vehicle sales in addition to passenger cars. Additionally, China exported 679,000 NEVs in 2022, a 120% increase from 2021, which accounted for roughly 10% of NEVs manufactured and sold in the country.

According to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), BYD is the leading NEV manufacturer, selling 1,863,494 units in 2022, a 208.64% increase from 2021. Among the powertrains, BYD sold 911,140 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and 946,239 plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs).

Tesla also saw significant growth, selling 710,865 BEVs built in Shanghai, with 439,770 sold domestically and 271,095 exported, a 67% increase from 2021. GAC Aion is establishing itself as the third-largest electric vehicle manufacturer, with 271,156 BEVs sold in 2022, a 126% increase from the previous year.

Other notable manufacturers include Volkswagen Group, Neta, Nio, Xpeng, Leapmotor, Zeekr, BMW, and Smart #1. Neta and Leapmotor saw a significant increase in sales, while Nio and Xpeng had more moderate growth. The Volkswagen Group saw a significant increase in sales of NEVs manufactured in China, while BMW improved its delivery result by 92%.
