Molicel has introduced its INR-21700-P70X lithium-ion battery cell, designed for hybrid vehicle applications that require both high energy density and rapid power delivery.

Designed for Hybrid Powertrains

The new cell was unveiled at the Advanced Automotive Battery Conference Europe 2026.

The INR-21700-P70X offers a capacity of 7,000 mAh, an energy density of 340 Wh/kg, and supports 30C continuous discharge, positioning it for hybrid electric vehicle powertrains that experience frequent, high-power charging and discharging events.

According to Molicel, the cell can deliver 900 watts of peak power for up to five seconds and transition to high-power output in less than 200 microseconds. The company said these characteristics are intended to support rapid acceleration, overtaking and regenerative braking events.

Thermal and Durability Performance

Molicel said the battery incorporates its proprietary single-crystal electrode technology, which reduces exothermal heat generation by approximately 50% compared with conventional polycrystalline materials.

The company added that the cell has successfully completed the UL9540A thermal runaway evaluation.

Under a testing profile designed to simulate supercapacitor operating conditions, the battery retained 96% of its original capacity after one million charge-discharge cycles, according to Molicel.

Growing Hybrid Vehicle Market

The launch comes as hybrid vehicles continue to account for a growing share of global vehicle sales.

Unlike battery electric vehicles, which typically undergo fewer but deeper charging cycles, hybrid vehicles subject batteries to hundreds of thousands of rapid, shallow power pulses throughout their operating life.

Molicel said the P70X has been developed to address these operating conditions as automakers continue expanding hybrid powertrain offerings alongside fully electric vehicle programs.
