MG is recalling nearly 10,000 units of its all-electric S5 EV after identifying a defect that could cause the vehicle’s cooling fan controller to overheat in cold weather.
The recall affects 9,806 vehicles manufactured between 22 January 2025 and 29 January 2026, including 1,830 vehicles in Germany. The campaign is being supervised in Germany by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) under reference number 16617R.

Frozen Cooling Fan May Cause Overheating
According to the KBA, the issue involves the radiator cooling fan operating in low ambient temperatures.
If the fan freezes and becomes immobilized, activating the vehicle’s cabin heating system could cause the series resistor within the fan controller to overheat. In severe cases, the overheating may create a fire risk.
The authority said incidents involving property damage and personal injury have been reported in connection with the defect, although it did not disclose the number of cases or provide additional details.
Software Update Planned
MG said it will address the issue by releasing updated IMCU software designed to prevent critical overheating under the affected operating conditions.

The company has not yet announced when the software update will be available or when owners will be asked to bring their vehicles in for the recall.
The recall is being managed internally under campaign code RE005.
Recall Affects Recently Introduced Electric SUV
The MG S5 EV has been available in Germany since 2025, replacing the MG ZS EV in the company’s battery-electric vehicle lineup.
The compact electric sport utility vehicle is built on the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) developed by MG’s parent company, SAIC.
The recall applies to vehicles produced between 22 January 2025 and 29 January 2026.
