Electric vehicles are gaining increasing popularity and becoming more affordable with each passing day. This trend has received a significant boost from the introduction of the MG Comet. However, prudent Indian consumers should be aware that despite its “no-nonsense” approach to modern transportation, this new compact car comes with some real-life limitations.
The MG Comet is priced at a modest starting point of INR 798,000 (~US$9,768). Nevertheless, buyers will find its design reminiscent of an AI’s interpretation of the “Fiat 500 but cuboid,” despite MG’s claim that it is aesthetically appealing and Instagram-worthy.
This unique design translates into a wheelbase of approximately 2 meters and an impressively tight turning circle of just 4.2 meters. Despite its compact size, MG asserts that the Comet can comfortably accommodate four people, although the total interior volume measures around 7.34 cubic meters. Additionally, the car features dual infotainment displays, one of which is conveniently placed behind the “leather” steering wheel equipped with audio controls.
However, these features fail to overshadow the limitations of the budget electric car, particularly its 17.3kWh battery. This battery provides a maximum output of 40 horsepower and 110Nm of torque. It offers a range of up to 143 miles (230km) per charge, which takes a total of 7 hours to complete (or 5.5 hours for an 80% charge) using a 3.3 kW type-2 input.
Furthermore, despite the Comet’s front and rear suspension, its wheels are a mere 12 inches in size, smaller than those commonly found on e-bikes. Consequently, unless a buyer specifically desires a compact car for short or urban trips, the MG Comet may not fulfill all their requirements.
