Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has announced that Tesla is considering establishing a facility in two different states of Mexico. During a press conference, López Obrador confirmed that the electric vehicle manufacturer is weighing its options between Nuevo Leon and Hidalgo.
This announcement comes on the heels of previous statements made by high-level government officials indicating Tesla’s interest in establishing a presence in Mexico. This move by Tesla would mark a significant step for the automaker in expanding its operations in the region.
Tesla’s interest in Nuevo Leon, a province bordering Texas, has been a topic of discussion since the end of last year. Reports had claimed that the company was close to announcing a new Gigafactory in the area, but these reports were premature and an official announcement never came. The deputy secretary of economic development for Nuevo Leon, Emmanuel Loo, later confirmed that no agreement had been reached between Tesla and the province.
However, it appears that Nuevo Leon may not be the only location under consideration by Tesla. Mexican presidential spokesman Jesus Ramirez recently confirmed that the company is also exploring the possibility of setting up an assembly plant near Mexico City’s Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) in the state of Hidalgo. With multiple potential locations in the mix, it remains to be seen where Tesla will ultimately choose to establish its latest plant.
While Tesla remains tight-lipped about its expansion plans, Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Minister Marcelo Ebrard has hinted that an official announcement could be on the horizon. The electric car giant is not limiting its growth prospects to just Mexico, as it is also actively exploring opportunities in Canada.
According to sources, the provinces of Quebec and Ontario are the front-runners for the potential facility, with Tesla’s lobbying activities and job postings in these regions indicating a strong interest. The company’s expansion into North America continues to generate excitement and anticipation among industry experts and fans alike.
