The Metorbike, an innovative electric moped, is capturing attention with its distinctive blend of styles and features. Crafted by two engineers in Hamburg, Germany, this city runabout showcases a unique fusion of a Puch AX 40 frame, elements of an ultramodern café racer, and an electric motor. Its striking design incorporates modern touches such as a digital dashboard, compact integrated taillights and turn signals, a wooden tail piece, and hand-sewn saddle and grips. What sets the Metorbike apart is its ability to simulate engine sounds, addressing a common criticism of electric motorcycles.
Equipped with a controller area network (CAN) sound module, the Metorbike offers a stock sound profile that mimics the sound of a conventional motorcycle engine. For those seeking variety, an optional multisound pack provides eight different engine sounds, including those of V6, V8, and V10 car engines, with some sound packs even simulating gearshift noises.
Underneath its stylish exterior, the Metorbike is powered by a two-kilowatt, brushless DC motor, delivering an impressive claimed 2.72 horsepower. Its peak power, as stated by its creators, reaches 7 kW (approximately 9.3 horsepower). The frame originates from the Puch AX 40 moped, while the fork is sourced from an Aprilia RS 125. This electric moped rides on 17-inch spoked wheels adorned with Kenda retro tires and relies on disc brakes for reliable stopping power.
The battery, described as “recycled from the automotive industry,” adopts a lithium nickel manganese oxide composition. Although specific details about the recycling process are not disclosed, the battery offers an estimated range of 60 kilometers (37 miles). Weighing 11.8 kilograms (26 pounds) on its own, the removable battery allows for easy swapping and an additional battery can be purchased separately for added convenience.
With a seat height of 770 millimeters (30.3 inches) and a total weight of 76 kilograms (167.5 pounds) including the battery, the Metorbike provides a comfortable and lightweight riding experience. It achieves a top speed of 49.5 kilometers per hour (30.75 miles per hour). Recharging the battery takes approximately three to four hours using a standard outlet.
Notable features of the Metorbike include a keyless RFID chip for unlocking, a digital speedometer with a touchscreen, a solid wood bench beneath the saddle customizable with seat upholstery, and engraved grips. Additionally, it comes equipped with two side mirrors. Personalization options include a GPS tracker for anti-theft purposes, illuminated tank logos, milled aluminum switch gears instead of standard plastic ones, a full leather seat, special finishes, and more.
Each Metorbike is meticulously crafted by hand in collaboration with the buyer, ensuring a bespoke experience. Limited to just 50 units, the Founders Edition Metorbikes start at âŹ7,749 (approximately $8,477 as of June 16, 2023), with additional charges for optional configurations. Currently available exclusively in Germany, these electric mopeds can be ridden legally with a regular car driver’s license, further enhancing their appeal to potential buyers.
