Mercedes Teases All-electric G-Class with a 360-Degree Turn on Advancements

German automaker Mercedes-Benz is set to revolutionize its iconic G-Class with an all-electric variant, and CEO Ola Kaellenius suggests it could surpass its traditional counterpart in off-road capabilities. In a recently released outdoor video featuring the electric G-Class, Kaellenius, alongside chief engineer Fabian Schossau, provides insights into the vehicle’s development and distinctive features. The electric G-Class was initially announced four years ago, and now, key details have been revealed.

Maintaining the classic boxy silhouette, the electric G-Wagon, as showcased in the video, retains the unmistakable appearance of a true G-Class. While camouflaged in the prototype, Mercedes-Benz had previously unveiled the Concept EQG in 2021, offering a preview of essential design elements.

The development team subjected the electric off-roader to rigorous testing on the Schoeckl mountain in Graz, Austria, where the G-Class was originally conceived. The vehicle, equipped with a unique drivetrain featuring four electric motorsā€”one at each wheelā€”demonstrated impressive off-road capabilities through a demanding regimen, including 336 ascents and descents. Smart software managed torque distribution, allowing for notable off-road feats, including a G-turn.

Beyond off-road prowess, Mercedes is advancing battery technology for the electric G-Class. The vehicle will utilize a state-of-the-art silicon anode battery, expected to increase energy density by 20 to 40% compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries, potentially extending the vehicle’s range significantly.

The potential for the electric G-Class to match or even surpass the traditional model in off-road capabilities is drawing attention, signaling a notable shift towards electrification without compromising performance. Despite this move, CEO Kaellenius assures enthusiasts that the traditional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) version will continue alongside the electric variant, providing options for fans of the iconic off-roader.

While the exact release date for the electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class remains undisclosed, industry speculations point to a potential market introduction in 2024, likely as a 2025 model-year offering.
