Mercedes-Benz became the first car manufacturer in the world to meet the requirements for the use of Level 3 autonomous driving systems.
The approval was granted by UN-R157, the UN regulatory body that sets Level 3 autonomous driving technology standards.
“With the approval of the authorities, we have now achieved a breakthrough: We are the first manufacturer to put conditional automatic drive into series production in Germany,” said Markus Schafer, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Chief Technology Officer and Mercedes-Benz AG. today, Saturday, December 11, 2021.
Mercedes-Benz informed that the automatic driving technology or autonomous car called DRIVE PILOT will be available in Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Mercedes-Benz EQS models in the first half of 2022.
The first customers of this car will be able to drive in conditional automatic mode at a speed of 60 km/h in heavy traffic.
Automated driving equipment or the DRIVE PILOT autonomous car will take the driver’s stress away and allow him to perform additional tasks on the central screen. Those additional tasks like shopping online or processing email at the office in the car.
The German luxury car manufacturer is offering the DRIVE PILOT autonomous car test on a 13,191 km highway in Germany and a number of countries, such as the United States and China.
As soon as those countries allow Level 3 autonomous car driving technology, Mercedes-Benz will start rolling it out.
