Mercedes-Benz Cars has unveiled its second-quarter 2023 sales figures, showcasing a notable surge in global car sales. With a six percent year-over-year increase, the company reported a total of 515,746 units sold during this quarter. This performance continues the positive trajectory witnessed in the first half of the year, with sales improving by 4.6 percent year-over-year to slightly surpass the 1 million mark.
A pivotal highlight within this sales report is the significant upswing in rechargeable car sales. These vehicles accounted for nearly one-fifth of the total sales volume, reflecting a shifting trend towards more sustainable mobility solutions. Specifically, in the second quarter of 2023, Mercedes-Benz Cars witnessed an impressive surge in sales of plug-in passenger cars, which recorded a remarkable 51 percent year-over-year increase, translating to a notable 18.6 percent share of the market.
The spotlight, however, rests on battery electric cars (BEVs), which exhibited an almost twofold surge in sales year-over-year, reaching a substantial 61,211 units, constituting 11.9 percent of the overall volume. This achievement marks a new record for the company and underlines the growing preference for electric vehicles. Moreover, plug-in hybrid car (PHEV) sales displayed a commendable seven percent year-over-year increase, reaching 34,699 units. Yet, it is evident that the primary thrust and potential for growth currently lie within the domain of BEVs.
