Nowadays, touch screens are starting to take over the interiors of modern vehicles. Mercedes’ UX design director, Klaus Frenzel, still thinks that a widescreen dashboard is the right move for the industry today.
It may come as no surprise that Mercedes supports this, as Mercedes is the maker of the Hyperscreen for touchscreen-enabled dashboards. Indeed, Frenzel recently explained to Car Design News how a good screen opens up a lot of possibilities for various advanced features.
“The screen is like a playing field, the bigger the screen, the more you can do. The visual part isn’t all, the rest is off-screen. It’s the combination that makes the difference.” said Frenzel
He explains, however, that size isn’t the only thing that matters. Instead, the automaker must consider the soundscape, voice interaction, and more. All factors must combine to provide the best products to consumers.
“Just a large screen doesn’t provide an experience, it’s like watching a movie without sound, there’s definitely something missing in the film, even though the screen size is the same. Everything has to blend together to provide a holistic experience.” continued Frenzel
The UX team will keep in touch with the UI team to ensure that the screen is working flawlessly. They also have to discuss with the designer, because the Hyperscreen, reflects the grille design on the Mercedes EQ car.
The designers also have to think hard, so that the technology can be easily used by anyone. “It can be dangerous within the company when developing things like this, because the staff may think all their customers will be able to understand using the technology, because they have been working on it for years. The staff may not imagine that anyone doesn’t understand, ‘ closed Frenzel.
