According to a report, McLaren is reportedly developing a four-door electric vehicle to rival the Porsche Taycan.
While former McLaren chief executive Mike Flewitt has insisted the British automaker would not venture out of its supercar roots, new chief executive Michael Leiters is far more open to expanding the brand’s reach.
Leiters will lead McLaren into electrification and as well as building the Artura hybrid, various other new models are planned.
While one might think McLaren could follow the likes of Rimac, Pininfarina and Lotus in releasing an electric hypercar with nearly 2,000 hp, Leiters told Auto Express that it is more likely they will create a lifestyle-oriented EV.
“The technology is much more mature and allows us to customize it for functionality and lifestyle. I think McLaren has the potential to produce a model that has the ability to share with more passengers in the car, not just limited to 2 people.” he said.
If McLaren wanted to build such a model, Leiters said it would have to live up to its design philosophy, with light weight and dynamic looking DNA for the model.
Whatever the model, it certainly won’t be cheap as Leiters prices the McLaren at around Ā£200,000.
“What I’ve heard from my team is that in the past, we received a product that wasn’t mature and would roll it out and ship it to the customer. Artura was the first project where we didn’t do it. We saw the car was immature, so we stopped deliveries. Doing this puts the company’s financial position at risk, but I think it’s important.”
