Maserati, an Italian luxury car manufacturer, is reportedly planning to lower the charging speed of its electric vehicles (EVs) in order to keep them lightweight and reduce costs. This news comes ahead of the release of the company’s first EV, the GranTurismo Folgore, which is equipped with an 800-volt platform and can charge at a speed of up to 270 kW. While other automakers are striving to increase the charging speed of their EVs, Maserati appears to be taking a different approach.
According to Autocar UK, Maserati may consider selling an electric vehicle (EV) that does not offer fast charging capabilities. The global head of e-Mobility at Maserati, Ana Paola Reginatto, reportedly stated that fast charging can add unnecessary weight to an EV, diminishing its handling and performance. Instead, Reginatto suggested that slow charging could be utilized during the time that a car is stationary, as this is typically more frequent than when it is in motion.
Ana Paola Reginatto, global head of e-Mobility at Maserati, has suggested that the company may sell electric vehicles (EVs) without fast charging capabilities in order to make them lighter, cheaper, and simpler to manufacture. Reginatto emphasized that while most people only need to go on long drives or pack their cars for holidays once a year, they still purchase cars based on those extreme scenarios, leading to excessive consumption.
By promoting slower charging, Maserati could potentially achieve significant benefits such as reducing the weight of onboard chargers, which can weigh up to 40 kg. Reginatto stated that the company is committed to delivering a high-performance and luxurious driving experience, as demonstrated with the Grecale SUV, rather than focusing on features like fast charging that may not be as practical in real-world usage.
