Maruti Suzuki has launched the e-Vitara, its first fully electric vehicle in India, offering customers the choice between conventional ownership and a battery-as-a-service (BaaS) subscription model aimed at reducing purchase costs.
The electric SUV is available in four trims—Delta, Zeta, Alpha and Alpha Dual Tone—with ex-showroom prices ranging from 1.599 million rupees to 2.001 million rupees. Under the BaaS scheme, buyers can purchase the vehicle without the battery at significantly lower prices starting from 1.099 million rupees, while paying a usage-based fee per kilometre for battery leasing.
Maruti Suzuki has initially introduced only front-wheel-drive variants powered by permanent magnet synchronous motors. The entry-level Delta trim uses a 105.8 kW motor paired with a 49 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, delivering a claimed range of 440 kilometres. Higher trims feature a more powerful 128 kW motor and a 61 kWh LFP battery, offering a range of up to 543 kilometres on a single charge.
Charging times vary depending on battery size. Using a 7.4 kW AC charger, a full charge takes about six and a half hours for the smaller battery and roughly nine hours for the larger pack. DC fast charging can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in around 45 minutes.
The e-Vitara enters the market at a lower starting price than several rivals, including the Hyundai Creta Electric, as the company seeks to broaden EV adoption in a price-sensitive market. Maruti Suzuki has equipped the model with features such as a dual 10.25-inch digital display setup, automatic climate control and connected car functions across the range, along with seven airbags and electronic stability systems as standard.
Higher trims add premium features including ventilated power-adjustable seats, a panoramic-style fixed glass roof, a premium audio system and Level 2 advanced driver assistance functions. A wireless charging pad, 360-degree camera and adaptive lighting are also included on upper variants.
To support charging access, the company is offering a complimentary 7.4 kW home wall box during the introductory period, including installation. Buyers will also receive one year of free charging at Maruti Suzuki dealerships, capped at 1,000 kWh.
Deliveries have begun, though availability will remain constrained in the initial months due to production limitations, according to Partho Banerjee, the company’s senior executive officer for marketing and sales.
The launch marks a significant step for India’s largest carmaker as it enters the country’s growing electric vehicle market, where affordability and infrastructure remain key barriers to widespread adoption.
