MAN Engines is set to showcase its latest innovation, the “MAN BatteryPack,” at the EnergyDecentral 2024 in Hanover, Germany. The battery solution, which features a modular nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cell design, offers flexible integration options for various mobile and stationary applications. A configuration of six MAN BatteryPacks can deliver a gross energy capacity of up to 534 kWh (480 kWh net), according to the company.

Each MAN BatteryPack has a capacity of 89 kWh, of which 80 kWh is usable, and contains multiple battery modules arranged in two to four layers. MAN offers three shape variations for the packs—from nearly square to elongated—enabling customers to adapt the battery packs to different installation spaces. Designed with durability in mind, the packs prioritize cell chemistry, charge cycles, mechanical robustness, and vibration resistance, making them suitable for high-demand applications such as mobile charging stations, commercial vehicles, and off-highway machinery.

Reiner Roessner, Head of Sales at MAN Engines, highlighted the choice of NMC chemistry for its high energy density, stating, “We see MAN BatteryPacks in mobile charging solutions are exposed to high loads and must meet various operating conditions.” The MAN BatteryPack is manufactured at the MAN Truck & Bus plant in Nuremberg, where engineers have focused on extending the battery’s service life and recyclability.

MAN Engines is committed to sustainable lifecycle management for its battery solutions. As part of the Volkswagen Group recycling network, MAN partners with European recyclers to recover raw materials like nickel, manganese, cobalt, and lithium, ensuring a closed-loop approach for batteries at the end of their service life. The EnergyDecentral 2024 trade fair will run from November 12 to 15 in Hanover, Germany, where the MAN BatteryPack will be on public display.
