German automotive supplier Mahle has announced securing two major orders for thermal management modules for electric vehicles (EVs), totaling almost 1.5 billion euros. This milestone includes the largest single order in Mahle’s corporate history.

The significant order comes from an undisclosed “established, globally positioned vehicle manufacturer.” The second order is from an “up-and-coming, innovative car manufacturer from the Asian region.” This diversification in clients showcases Mahle’s appeal to both traditional automakers and emerging EV startups.

The thermal management modules integrate components for controlling battery temperature, vehicle interior, powertrain, and power electronics. This integration enhances system efficiency compared to individual components, leading to smaller installation spaces and reduced assembly costs. Mahle emphasizes the importance of thermal management in electrification, describing it as a key factor in making EVs attractive and affordable.

These modules were developed by Mahle’s international team at the Tech Centre in Stuttgart and regional development units. While specific details of the solutions were not disclosed, Mahle mentioned that one module integrates the refrigerant circuit with the coolant circuits, ensuring optimal temperature control for the battery, powertrain, and vehicle cabin in all seasons.

Jumana Al-Sibai, a member of Mahle’s Group Management Board responsible for the Thermal Management division, highlighted their deep system understanding and production experience as key factors in securing these orders. Al-Sibai stated, “By being able to look at thermal systems in vehicles as a whole, we can develop innovative, tailor-made concepts for our customers.”

With heating and cooling playing a more significant role in EVs due to the absence of a combustion engine as a heat source, Mahle predicts a threefold increase in sales potential per vehicle for EV suppliers. The global market for thermal management technologies is expected to grow from around 35 billion euros in 2021 to 50 billion euros by 2030. Mahle aims to capitalize disproportionately on this growth.

Mahle’s success in securing these orders underscores its position as a leading provider of thermal management solutions for the rapidly expanding electric vehicle market.
