US electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid Motors has entered into a supply agreement with Graphite One for synthetic active anode materials to be used in its vehicle batteries. The agreement stipulates that the graphite materials and battery anodes will be mined and manufactured entirely in the United States.

The non-binding agreement outlines a supply of 5,000 tonnes per year once Graphite One begins production of synthetic graphite. The initial term of the agreement is five years, with provisions for earlier termination. Pricing will be based on a formula reflecting future market conditions and agreed base prices. The agreement also includes customary conditions and cancellation rights.

Lucid Motors Unveils First Pre-Production Gravity SUV

Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO of Lucid Motors, stated, ā€œWe are committed to accelerating the transition to sustainable vehicles and the development of a robust domestic supply chain ensures the United States, and Lucid, will maintain technology leadership in this global race.ā€ He added, ā€œThrough work with partners like Graphite One, we will have access to American-sourced critical raw materials, helping power our award-winning vehicles made with pride in Arizona.ā€

Currently, the US relies entirely on imports for synthetic and natural graphite. Graphite One is developing a comprehensive, US-based graphite supply chain utilizing the Graphite Creek deposit, described by the US Geological Survey as one of the largest graphite deposits in the world. The company plans to build an advanced graphite materials and battery anode production facility in Warren, Ohio, which will also house a recycling facility for graphite and other battery materials.

Anthony Huston, President and CEO of Graphite One, remarked, ā€œThis is a historic moment for Graphite One, Lucid, and North America: the first synthetic graphite Supply Agreement between a U.S. graphite developer and U.S. EV company.ā€ He added, ā€œG1 is excited to continue pushing forward developing our 100% U.S. domestic supply chain.ā€

The agreement follows Graphite Oneā€™s site selection in March for its proposed facility, located on a former U.S. government site in Warren, Ohio. The site, with existing power infrastructure and access to low-cost renewable energy, will support the initial production target of 25,000 tonnes per year, with plans to expand to 100,000 tonnes per year.
