Lucid has issued a recall affecting more than 2,000 Air Pure Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) sedans in the United States and Canada due to a defect that could lead to a loss of propulsion while driving.
According to documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Transport Canada, the recall covers 2,039 vehicles in the United States and 34 vehicles in Canada from the 2024 and 2025 model years.
Issue Linked to Gen 4 Inverter
The recall involves a specific version of Lucid’s Gen 4 inverter, which converts direct current (DC) electricity from the battery into alternating current (AC) used by the electric motor.
According to the company, vibrations generated during vehicle operation may cause internal inverter components to rub against one another over time. This process, known as fretting, can damage electrical connections and potentially result in signal interruptions within the inverter.
If the condition progresses, the inverter may no longer be able to supply power to the motor, leading to a loss of propulsion.
Rear-Wheel Drive Models Affected
The recall is limited to Air Pure RWD variants because these vehicles rely on a single rear drive unit.
Other Lucid Air models use multiple drive units, which provide additional redundancy in the event of a component failure.
Lucid said its investigation began in March 2025 after inverter failures were observed in fleet vehicles that accumulated mileage more rapidly than typical customer vehicles. Similar failures were later identified in customer-owned vehicles.
During the investigation, the company recorded 55 inverter failures between March 2025 and March 2026 that were linked to the affected Gen 4 inverter design.
Software Update Planned
Rather than replacing all inverters immediately, Lucid plans to deploy an over-the-air (OTA) software update by the end of June 2026.
The update will monitor inverter performance and alert drivers if signs of a potential failure are detected.
The warning message will state:
“Drive System Fault, Schedule Service Immediately.”
According to Lucid, data from previous incidents indicates the warning should appear at least 100 miles (160 kilometres) before a potential inverter failure occurs.
Vehicles displaying the warning will be inspected by Lucid service technicians and may receive a replacement inverter at no cost to the owner. Replacement units will use a newer inverter design that is not affected by the issue.
Investigation Identified Root Cause
Lucid said engineers initially evaluated various mitigation measures, including modifications to thermal management and cooling strategies. However, the company ultimately concluded that friction-related wear inside the inverter was the primary cause of the failures.
The automaker stated that no similar issues have been identified in vehicles equipped with earlier or later generations of the inverter.
Follows Earlier Drive Unit Recall
The inverter recall follows another recent recall affecting Lucid Air Pure RWD vehicles.
Last month, Lucid expanded a recall covering more than 3,700 Air Pure RWD vehicles in North America after identifying a potential issue involving improperly secured half-shaft bolts. In that case, a disconnected half-shaft could also result in a loss of drive power.
Both recalls involve components that are particularly critical in rear-wheel-drive vehicles because they rely on a single drive unit for propulsion.
Lucid said affected owners will be notified of the latest recall and provided with instructions regarding the OTA update and any required service actions.
