Lucid Motors Issues Triple Recall for Air Sedan, Affecting Over 6,200 Vehicles

In a significant move, Lucid Motors has announced the issuance of three distinct recalls for its Air sedan model, all on the same day. These recalls, released on July 27, 2023, have ramifications for a total of more than 6,200 vehicles, drawing attention to various issues that require attention and correction.

The first recall pertains to 778 Air sedans manufactured between October 22, 2021, and June 29, 2023. This recall centers around a software flaw that has come to light in these vehicles. The flaw holds the potential for an unexpected power loss in rare instances of a power module inverter failure. Notably, vehicles running software versions below 2.0.66 are lacking a critical safeguard against this possible hazard.

While most drivers would typically receive a forewarning roughly two minutes prior to a complete motor shutdown due to inverter power failure, certain Lucid Air owners have encountered a more serious outcome. On specific occasions, an inverter malfunction could trigger disengagement of the fuses, leading to an abrupt loss of power devoid of any prior warning. In response, Lucid has initiated plans to address this issue by deploying a software update across all 778 affected vehicles.

The second recall encompasses the largest scope, affecting a total of 5,523 Air sedans. This recall, however, casts a wider net as it applies to every single Air sedan produced between October 22, 2021, and June 13, 2023. This time, the focal point is potential complications with the windshield wiper arm nuts. Over time, these nuts could progressively loosen, potentially compromising the efficiency of the windshield wipers or even rendering them entirely non-functional. Taking proactive steps, Lucid has already carried out the re-torqueing of wiper arm nuts in 2,431 vehicles as a preemptive measure. The remaining 5,523 Lucid Airs impacted by this recall will undergo the same meticulous re-torqueing process, aiming to ensure optimal wiper function.

In the third and final recall, a more contained set of 59 vehicles, manufactured between November 24, 2021, and January 29, 2023, are being called back. This recall addresses a distinct concern where the rear-view image fails to materialize when the vehicle is shifted into reverse gear.

Notably, this issue affects vehicles still operating on software versions ranging from 2.0.15 to 2.0.50. To counter this anomaly, the impacted vehicle owners will be receiving comprehensive instructions through both email and first-class mail on the appropriate steps to update their vehicle software.
