A recent report by consulting firm P3 Group has revealed that the Lucid Air Grand Touring offers the highest charging speed and driving range among all electric vehicles (EVs) sold in the US. This news comes as no surprise, as consumers continue to prioritize range and charging speed when shopping for an EV.
Priced at $139,650, including destination fees, the Lucid Air Grand Touring demonstrated its superiority by achieving the most range during a 20-minute charging session, covering an impressive distance of 208 miles. This achievement places the Lucid Air GT at the top of the charging metric among the 13 EVs analyzed in the report. The exceptional range is largely attributed to the vehicle’s 800-volt battery architecture and impressive efficiency. Furthermore, the Lucid Air GT boasts an EPA-estimated range of 516 miles from its 112-kilowatt-hour battery pack.
Coming in second place in the study is the Tesla Model S Plaid, priced at $109,880. Despite utilizing a 400-volt battery architecture, the Model S Plaid managed to charge 193 miles in 20 minutes, showcasing its remarkable performance. The vehicle’s EPA-estimated range is 396 miles, courtesy of its 95-kWh battery.
While the Lucid Air GT and Tesla Model S Plaid cater to the luxury segment, the third-ranked EV in the report is the more affordable Kia EV6 Long Range RWD, priced at $43,920. Impressively, the Kia EV6 achieved a charging range of 191 miles in 20 minutes, only 17 miles less than the Lucid Air GT, despite the significant price difference.
The success of the Kia EV6 can be attributed to its utilization of the E-GMP platform, which features an 800-volt battery architecture. Additionally, the Kia EV6 offers an EPA-estimated range of 310 miles from its 74-kWh battery pack.
These top three models outperformed the other EVs included in the analysis by a significant margin. The Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD ranked fourth, achieving a charging range of 169 miles in 20 minutes, followed by the Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD with 161 miles in the same time frame. Notably, these two Tesla models were recognized as leaders in the Tax Credit eligible category.
Interestingly, while the Lucid Air Grand Touring demonstrated the greatest range from a 20-minute fast charge, the Kia EV6 LR RWD excelled in a 10-minute charge, achieving a range of 127 miles, surpassing the Lucid Air and Tesla models.
The P3 Group report evaluated 13 EVs tested on Electrify America 350-kilowatt chargers and Tesla Superchargers in San Francisco from April 3 to 16. All vehicles were preconditioned before charging. Notably, the report did not include data on charger uptime or reliability.
P3 Group’s conclusion in its 2023 P3 Charging Index United States highlighted the importance of battery conditioning, efficiency, and improved charging power to drive increased EV adoption. The report serves as a valuable resource for industry stakeholders aiming to enhance the charging experience for EV users.
