Long Beach Port Receives $34.9 Million Grant to Advance Electrification Efforts

The Long Beach Container Terminal (LBCT) in Long Beach, California, has secured a substantial $34.9 million grant from the US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to advance its electrification efforts. This grant, part of a series totaling over $46 million from the FHWA, will facilitate the replacement of 155 on-site commercial trucks and buses with zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) at LBCT.

Anthony Otto, CEO of LBCT, highlighted the grant’s significance, stating, “Our vehicle electrification project, coupled with previous investments, enables LBCT to achieve a unique status that is reframing the way the world views sustainable goods movement, enhancing community quality of life and climate change.”

The FHWA funding will cover the acquisition of new electric trucks and the establishment of the necessary charging infrastructure to support them, further supporting LBCT’s commitment to sustainable logistical operations. This grant adds to LBCT’s existing investments in sustainable practices, demonstrating the company’s dedication to environmental responsibility.

In alignment with its commitment to sustainability, the Port of Long Beach has already invested over $2.5 billion in converting its cranes and terminal tractors to electric equipment. This initiative, first announced in 2018, has led to a remarkable 86 percent reduction in harmful carbon emissions, underscoring the port’s efforts to adopt green technology within the industry.

US House Representative Robert Garcia praised the grant as a positive step towards cleaner air and achieving climate goals, stating, “This investment is a significant win for clean air, electrification, and the region.”

In a separate development, charging infrastructure operator Voltera announced that its sites in California and Georgia will receive $11.4 million from the FHWA funding, further advancing the infrastructure needed for widespread adoption of electric vehicles.
