LION Smart has been commissioned by an unnamed premium original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to conduct a feasibility study on a fast-charging battery system designed for electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). The goal is to develop a battery capable of delivering a driving range of up to 450 kilometers after just 15 minutes of charging, supporting charging rates of up to 3 megawatts.
Currently, most electric trucks require overnight charging, and such a high-capacity battery system could significantly reduce the need for multiple chargers at truck depots, facilitating faster turnaround times. The concept under development centers on an immersion-cooled high-performance battery integrated with a battery management system featuring single-cell monitoring and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). LION Smart believes this combination will allow real-time battery condition analysis and effective thermal management, essential for achieving ultra-fast charging targets.
LION’s immersion cooling technology demonstrated promising results in 2024, with a 400-volt LION Smart battery surpassing performance benchmarks during stress testing. In July 2024, a German vehicle manufacturer tested a prototype ‘Lion Light’ battery on the track, reporting that vehicles equipped with 400- and 800-volt batteries performed “30 per cent above the current market standard.”
Joachim Damasky, CEO of LION E-Mobility, said, “This order is a clear signal of confidence in our technological expertise in the field of immersion-cooled battery systems. Our technology is designed for industrial applications with high requirements. The collaboration shows that our approach is perceived as a future-proof solution for heavy-duty electric transportation.”
