Leading the charge in the realm of commercial vehicle electrification, Lightning eMotors announced a significant achievement today as its deployed units clocked over five million real-world miles in the realm of electric mobility. The company, known for its zero-emission medium-duty commercial vehicles and cutting-edge EV technology, has emerged as a pioneer in the industry.
With a legacy dating back to the early stages of commercial EV development, Lightning eMotors has now solidified its position as a mature EV manufacturer, demonstrating its capability to effectively deploy substantial numbers of electric vehicles into the market. The achievement is a testament to the concerted efforts of the company’s dedicated workforce, responsible for the development, production, and support of these revolutionary vehicles.
“This isn’t the start of our journey. Lightning is a pioneer of commercial vehicle electrification, and five million miles is a huge accomplishment and a testament to our status as a mature EV manufacturer deploying meaningful numbers of vehicles into the market,” said Tim Reeser, co-founder and CEO of Lightning eMotors. “This milestone wouldn’t be possible without the work of hundreds of dedicated Lightning employees that develop, manufacture, and support our vehicles.”
The remarkable five-million-mile milestone is tracked and measured through Lightning Insights, the company’s sophisticated EV-specific telematics platform. Beyond mere mileage, the platform monitors an extensive array of over 150 data points, including vehicle location, state of charge, energy consumption, operational efficiency, vehicle health, and more. Notably, the aggregated performance data across the fleet underscores that Lightning’s current generation electric vehicles offer operational reliability comparable to traditional diesel-powered fleets. This achievement is underpinned by the substantial investments made by Lightning over the last two years in refining quality systems and enhancing customer service operations. Moreover, these eco-friendly vehicles have collectively offset approximately 9 million pounds of on-road CO2 emissions, signaling a positive stride towards sustainable transportation.
Lightning’s portfolio encompasses an array of cargo body styles, spanning cargo vans, box trucks, refrigerated trucks, utility trucks, and more. In the realm of passenger configurations, the company offers passenger vans, shuttle buses, and the popular ZEV4 Type A School Bus. The company’s innovative spirit is further evidenced by the production of specialized vehicles, including ambulances, coach buses, and even a mobile library van. These diverse offerings have collectively contributed to the substantial mileage accrued by Lightning EVs.
Nick Bettis, Vice President of Marketing and Sales Operations at Lightning eMotors, emphasized the milestone’s significance for fleet operations: “This milestone demonstrates the impact our commercial EVs can have on the environmental, logistical, and financial aspects of our customers’ fleet operations. I’m proud Lightning is the partner of choice for a growing number of fleets across the United States and Canada.”
