Li Auto has established two new robotics departments, expanding its focus on artificial intelligence and next-generation technologies. The move signals the Chinese electric vehicle maker’s ambition to diversify beyond the automotive sector.
According to local media outlet LatePost, the company has created dedicated teams for space robotics and wearable robotics, both operating under its product division. Leadership for the new departments has been assigned to experienced internal executives, who will report directly to senior management.
The rationale for the creation of these teams has not been formally disclosed, though the move aligns with the company’s ongoing exploration of AI applications. Industry observers suggest that this could be part of a longer-term shift, where vehicles and associated technologies are viewed as intelligent platforms rather than conventional transport tools.
The establishment of a wearable robotics team follows internal discussions on developing proprietary smart glasses, a segment some see as the next major consumer tech platform after smartphones. Sources in the smart glasses industry have pointed to growing interest in this area from both manufacturers and investors.
Li Auto’s robust financial position may be enabling it to pursue such diversification. The company posted a net profit of RMB 646.6 million ($89.9 million) in the first quarter, with cash reserves reaching RMB 110.7 billion ($15.4 billion) as of March 31, according to its latest unaudited financial statement.
