Li Auto is gearing up for the official launch of its first battery electric vehicle (BEV), the Li Mega (Multi-Purpose Vehicle), with CEO Li Xiang hinting at strong pre-order numbers and high expectations for its performance in the market.

In a recent Weibo post, Li Xiang stated that pre-orders for the Li Mega, secured with a RMB 5,000 ($700) reservation fee, have surpassed those of the Li L9, the company’s previous model, during the same period in 2022. He expressed confidence that the Li Mega would be a “blockbuster product” and urged suppliers and partners to ensure an adequate supply capacity.

The launch event for the Li Mega is scheduled for March 1 at 3:00 pm Beijing Time, where Li Auto will also unveil its 2024 L-series models. This marks the company’s foray into the pure EV market, having previously focused on extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) like the Li L7, L8, and L9.

The Li Mega was first unveiled at the 2023 Guangzhou auto show on November 17, with reservations opening on the same day. While the pre-sale price range was not disclosed, Li Auto has reiterated its expectation that the Li Mega will be a preferred choice for families looking for a premium model priced above RMB 500,000.

To incentivize pre-orders, Li Auto is offering customers the choice between a free upgrade to a 20-kW DC charging pile valued at RMB 10,000 or 6,000 kWh of free supercharging.

Li Auto delivered a total of 376,030 vehicles in 2023, the highest among China’s new car manufacturers. The company has set ambitious targets for 2024, aiming to achieve 800,000 annual deliveries and 100,000 monthly deliveries. Senior Vice President Zou Liangjun has stated that the Li Mega is expected to contribute significantly to these goals, with a target of 8,000 units sold per month after its launch.
