LG Energy Solution (LGES) has unveiled its new brand, B.around, aimed at providing comprehensive solutions in battery management systems (BMS). This initiative focuses on integrating software and hardware tailored for electric vehicle battery management, extending to customized solutions for software-defined vehicle (SDV) platforms and battery-as-a-service (BaaS) applications.
The name B.around signifies LGES’s strategic expansion into the BMS market, marking its commitment to delivering enhanced customer value and promoting safer battery usage beyond traditional battery manufacturing. The new brand aims to revolutionize battery management by offering more advanced solutions, incorporating features such as safety diagnostics, battery monitoring, and software integration specifically designed for SDVs.
“Be Around Your Side,” the brand’s slogan, reflects LGES’s mission to remain closely connected to its customers, ensuring a safe and seamless battery experience. Targeted primarily at global automakers, B.around promises to provide advanced functionalities compared to existing BMS solutions, which typically only measure battery voltage, current, and temperature.
B.around’s product suite includes two types of BMS software: safety diagnostic software, which proactively identifies potential issues such as thermal events, and battery degradation diagnostic software, designed to assess and predict battery capacity over time, thereby enhancing longevity and performance. The company’s offerings also encompass advanced BMS hardware that complements its software capabilities.
Brandon Kim, Head of the BaaS Business Development Department at LG Energy Solution, emphasized the company’s unique position in the market. “LG Energy Solution is the only battery manufacturer to provide a management service for the battery’s entire lifecycle, including BMS solutions,” he stated, reinforcing the brand’s vision to deliver differentiated customer value through its extensive technological expertise.
In March 2024, LGES announced plans to enhance battery management systems by partnering with Qualcomm. This collaboration aims to integrate LGES’s battery diagnostic software with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis platform, leveraging significantly increased computational power and artificial intelligence capabilities. The resultant BMS solution will be offered to global car manufacturers, although a timeline for series production has not yet been disclosed.
LGES’s BMS technologies have been developed through rigorous analysis, drawing insights from over 130,000 battery cells and 1,000 battery modules. The company’s BMS software is currently deployed in more than 100,000 electric vehicles, achieving a safety detection accuracy exceeding 90% and maintaining a battery diagnostic failure rate of just 1%. Furthermore, LGES holds over 8,000 patents related to BMS technologies, underscoring its innovation in the field.
