Leapmotor’s Former French Importer Sues Stellantis Over Contract Termination Amid EV Expansion

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Leapmotor is making significant strides in Europe, launching its C10 and T03 models through a joint venture with Stellantis. The order books for both models are now open, with the compact T03 priced competitively at under 20,000 euros. However, this promising expansion is facing challenges in France, where the previous importer, SN Diffusion, is taking Stellantis to court over contract disputes.

According to the French automotive portal Automobil Propre, Didier Sirgue, head of SN Diffusion and EVE (Espace Véhicules Électrique), has filed a lawsuit against Stellantis. SN Diffusion previously distributed Leapmotor’s T03 electric vehicle in France, but the company claims its contract, which was set to run until January 2025, was abruptly terminated in May 2024 without notice. The dispute arose following Stellantis’ acquisition of a 21% stake in Leapmotor in October 2023, which led to Stellantis taking over the distribution of Leapmotor vehicles across its established network in Europe. Sirgue argues that the termination of his contract is unjust and has decided to seek legal redress.

Leapmotor and Stellantis quickly formed a joint venture, Leapmotor International, to coordinate the marketing of Leapmotor’s electric vehicles. The venture aims to expand into key European markets, including France, Germany, Belgium, and several others. Deliveries of the first Leapmotor EVs are expected this year, and the joint venture also plans to extend its reach to regions such as the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and South America by the fourth quarter of 2024.

Stellantis has confirmed that the initial batch of Leapmotor EVs has already arrived in Germany from China. However, future models for the European market will be produced in Europe, with the T03 slated for production at Stellantis’ factory in Tychy, Poland. The manufacturing location for the C10 in Europe has yet to be determined, signaling ongoing plans to localize production as part of Leapmotor’s broader European strategy.
