Rivian is preparing to launch a revamped version of its popular R1 line for the 2025 model year. The upcoming updates aim to enhance both the performance and aesthetics of the vehicles, setting a new standard in the electric vehicle market.

One of the key updates for the 2025 R1 line is the introduction of a more affordable LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery option for the base model. This move is expected to make Rivian’s electric vehicles more accessible to a wider range of consumers while also helping the company achieve positive margins.

While the LFP battery offers cost advantages, it comes with a trade-off in energy density. To offset this, Rivian is implementing several efficiency-focused enhancements. These include the incorporation of a heat pump, which improves cabin heating efficiency in cold weather conditions, and the introduction of aerodynamic wheels. The latter is expected to significantly enhance vehicle aerodynamics, thereby increasing range and overall efficiency.

Leaked photos of the upcoming models reveal a slightly modified exterior design, including a possible chrome delete and redesigned headlights. The vehicles spotted in Seattle showcased a “chrome delete” feature around the rear window, a popular customization option among owners. It remains unclear whether this will be a standard feature or an optional upgrade. Additionally, the new front headlights boast a distinct “stepped” design, adding a fresh and modern look to the vehicle’s front fascia.

One of the most exciting updates is the inclusion of aerodynamic wheel covers. These covers are expected to improve efficiency by 5-10%, particularly at higher speeds. This enhancement is crucial for electric vehicles, where maximizing range is a key selling point for consumers. By reducing air resistance around the wheels, Rivian aims to improve overall efficiency and extend the vehicle’s range, enhancing the ownership experience for customers.

While the exact range improvement from the aerodynamic wheel covers on Rivian’s larger vehicles remains to be seen, the potential impact on energy savings could be significant. If every car in the U.S. were equipped with similar wheel covers, total energy use could be reduced by 1%, equivalent to 40 billion kWh per year. This underscores the importance of continuous innovation in enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of electric vehicles.
