Finnish charging hardware manufacturer Kempower has announced the opening of its new production facility in Durham County, North Carolina, marking its entry into the North American market. The plant, initially announced in February 2023, is set to produce charging infrastructure for customers in the USA and Canada.
Having received the necessary certification in November last year, Kempower’s US plant is now operational and will manufacture NEVI-compliant (National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure) fast chargers for electric cars, trucks, buses, and other electric vehicles for the North American market.
Jeff Marootian, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy, commended Kempower’s efforts, stating, “Kempower’s efforts complement the U.S. Department of Energy’s work to develop a nationwide EV charging network. By manufacturing and developing advanced charging solutions right here in the United States, Kempower is helping ensure we have the infrastructure needed to support the growing fleet of EVs on our roads.”
North America presents an attractive market for Kempower, with funding programs such as the NEVI support program contributing to its appeal. In April this year, Kempower announced the market launch of its MSC charger for trucks and heavy-duty vehicles, further solidifying its presence in the region.
Kempower plans to invest around 40 million dollars in the Durham County plant over the next five years, with expectations to create approximately 300 jobs. The company already operates three plants in Finland and aims to become one of the world’s top five suppliers of direct current charging systems by 2030, with its new US production base serving as a strategic step towards achieving this goal.
