Kempower has delivered an electric bus charging infrastructure project for Polish public transport operator Koleje Małopolskie, deploying 18 charging points across three locations in the Małopolska region.

The infrastructure, installed in Kraków, Tarnów and Proszowice, provides a combined charging capacity of 1.4 MW and supports the operation of Koleje Małopolskie’s growing zero-emission bus fleet. Kempower described the deployment as its largest electric bus charging infrastructure project in Poland to date.

Kempower Charging System Supports 20 Buses

The charging infrastructure supports 15 electric buses and five hydrogen fuel-cell buses acquired by Koleje Małopolskie as part of its fleet electrification program.

The electric fleet consists of four MIDI-class buses supplied by MAN Truck & Bus Polska and 11 MAXI-class buses from Solaris Bus & Coach. The operator also has five MEGA-class articulated Mercedes-Benz eCitaro hydrogen fuel-cell buses.

Koleje Małopolskie operates feeder bus services connecting communities across the Małopolska region with the railway network. The new infrastructure is designed to provide the charging capacity required for daily regional operations.

Distributed Charging Provides Flexible Power Management

Kempower’s charging solution uses a distributed charging system and Satellites, supported by a Station Charger at a remote location. A Movable Charger is also available for service purposes.

The system allows available power to be distributed across the fleet according to operational requirements. This approach is intended to help optimize charging capacity at locations with different site and electrical infrastructure conditions.

All three charging locations are managed through Kempower’s ChargEye Pro system. In cooperation with the three bus manufacturers, the platform also handles vehicle scheduling and preconditioning.

The combination of distributed charging and dynamic power distribution provides Koleje Małopolskie with a scalable system designed to support both current operations and future fleet requirements.

Kempower and BIBUS MENOS Support Regional Electrification

BIBUS MENOS served as the project delivery partner and system integrator, managing the complete implementation of the charging infrastructure.

“The Koleje Małopolskie project demonstrates how properly designed charging infrastructure can efficiently support the daily operation of electric bus fleets,” said Jakub Preinl, Business Development Director at BIBUS MENOS. “Together with Kempower, we delivered an 18-point charging system across three locations, providing flexible power distribution, efficient charging management, and a reliable foundation for the operator’s transition toward zero-emission public transport.”

Kempower Business Development Manager Grzegorz Kujawa said the distributed charging configuration helped address the challenges presented by the selected sites.

“This project shows how scalable, high-performance charging infrastructure can enable reliable electric bus operations today while supporting fleet growth tomorrow, accelerating the shift toward zero-emission public transport. We needed to fit into not always perfect locations, which become possible thanks to using distributed charging solutions.”

The completed project gives Koleje Małopolskie charging infrastructure at three locations and supports the continued deployment of zero-emission buses on regional routes.

For Kempower, the project represents its largest electric bus charging infrastructure deployment in Poland so far, while providing the operator with a charging platform designed to optimize power use and support the further electrification of public transport in the Małopolska region.
