Ohio-based automaker Lordstown Motors Corp. has encountered significant challenges in establishing a strong foothold in the electric pickup truck market. While competitors like Rivian and Ford have achieved considerable success with their electric truck offerings, Lordstown’s sales remained modest, with just three electric trucks sold in 2022. The company’s difficulties have been likened to a state of “production hell.”
In response to mounting financial woes, Lordstown Motors filed for bankruptcy in June of this year. Seeking a prompt resolution, the automaker requested an expedited bidding procedure, with the aim of offloading its assets as early as September. However, this request was denied by a United States bankruptcy judge, pending the resolution of a lawsuit filed by Irvine-based luxury EV manufacturer Karma Automotive against Lordstown Motors in 2020.

The lawsuit alleges that Lordstown Motors “stole ideas and employees” from Karma Automotive to cut costs. This legal dispute in California’s court has raised concerns about the true ownership of the intellectual property and assets that Lordstown intends to sell. Addressing this issue, Delaware’s bankruptcy judge, Mary Walrath, remarked, “The critical question in this case is whether the debtors have rightful ownership of the property they seek to sell,” according to Reuters.
While facing bankruptcy, Lordstown’s Endurance truck showcased promising specifications on paper. With 550 horsepower delivered through four in-wheel motors, the Endurance boasted an acceleration to sixty miles per hour in 6.3 seconds and a towing capacity of 8,000 pounds. However, its price tag of $65,060 and a limited EPA range of 174 miles proved to be significant hurdles, hindering its competitiveness in the market.
