Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has embarked on a comprehensive training campaign, educating both its own employees and those of authorized dealers in electrification and digitalization. This initiative has seen the participation of 20,000 individuals so far.
As a result of the training program, 95% of technicians at JLR’s global trading partners are now equipped to handle electric vehicles, totaling over 10,000 trained individuals. Additionally, more than 2,400 production employees from JLR’s UK facilities have undergone training, along with almost 3,000 engineers in electrification and approximately 2,500 in data and digital technology. Furthermore, over 4,200 apprentices and trainees from JLR and its partners are currently undergoing training.
JLR is also actively training 11,000 production employees to build electric cars. In the 2024 financial year, the company has created an additional 950 electrification engineering positions, expanding its skill base. These initiatives are integral to JLR’s Reimagine strategy, which aims to electrify the luxury brands under JLR by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2039.
The conversion of JLR plants to electric vehicle production is progressing rapidly, necessitating the training of the aforementioned 11,000 production employees. Going forward, JLR intends to train at least 15,000 more employees in production, technology, and workshops as part of the program.
The shift to electrification is creating more opportunities for individuals with diverse backgrounds. Unlike traditional work on combustion engines, roles related to electric vehicles are often more process-oriented and less reliant on intensive manual labor, making them accessible to a wider range of employees, including those with non-traditional backgrounds.
Barbara Bergmeier, JLR’s Executive Director of Industrial Operations, commented, “Our plans to electrify our ultra-desirable modern luxury brands are unfolding at speed, and I’m delighted with the pace that our Future Skills Programme is readying our talented workforce. We are working to attract and upskill a more diverse array of talent, and electrification is opening up new and more attractive opportunities for females such as Chloe, who have previously specialized in ICE technology. The realization of our Reimagine strategy is dependent on the skill of our people, and a more diverse workforce brings additional strength.”
