BMW has commenced production of test vehicles at its new factory in Debrecen, Hungary, marking a significant milestone in its transition to all-electric mobility. The test cars, prototypes of the all-electric X model under the Neue Klasse lineup, are part of the automaker’s efforts to validate and optimize production processes ahead of full-scale series production slated for late 2025.
“This is an important milestone in commissioning the new plant,” said Milan Nedeljković, BMW AG Board Member for Production. “These operations are just as complex as actual series production. Every part and every production step is closely scrutinized to ensure smooth workflows.” The test vehicles will go through all production stages, allowing BMW to fine-tune its logistics, facilities, and employee operations under real-world conditions.
The factory, which began construction in mid-2022, is a cornerstone of BMW’s ‘iFactory’ strategy, emphasizing sustainability, energy efficiency, and digitalized manufacturing. With an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles, the facility will exclusively produce electric vehicles, aligning with the company’s commitment to a fully electrified future.
While BMW has not disclosed details about the specific model, the Vision Neue Klasse X concept unveiled earlier this year provides hints of what the final design might look like. The Debrecen plant, considered BMW’s global flagship for EV production, underscores the automaker’s ambition to set a benchmark for its factories worldwide.
