The Jeep Avenger, an all-electric crossover, has won the Car of the Year for Europe award. The award, now in its 60th year, is decided by a jury of 57 European journalists. The Avenger beat out competitors such as the Volkswagen ID.Buzz and the Nissan Ariya.
The voting process is unique in that each jury member’s choices and reasoning are made public, with a maximum of 25 points to distribute among the seven finalists and no ties allowed.
The Jeep Avenger was announced as the winner of the Car of the Year for Europe award at a ceremony at the Brussels Motor Show on Friday. The Avenger received 328 votes, while the second place Volkswagen ID.Buzz received 241 votes, the Nissan Ariya received 211 votes and the Kia Niro received 200 votes.
Renault Austral received 162 votes, Peugeot 408 received 149 votes, and a joint entry of Subaru Solterra received 133 votes. 21 of the jury members chose the Avenger as their favorite car, while 16 chose the ID.Buzz. These seven cars were selected in an earlier vote, following testing events including a week-long test in Denmark where new cars are evaluated on public roads and a closed airfield.
The final evaluation of the seven Cars of the Year finalist took place this week at the Jules Tacheny race circuit in Belgium, where the vehicles were tested on both track and public roads.
The new Jeep Avenger is set to be available for sale in Ireland starting in July, with prices to be announced, but expected to start around €40,000. The Avenger shares its platform with the e-2008 and Mokka-e and has an estimated one-charge range of 400km.
