Japanese automaker Isuzu Motors announced plans to build a new production facility in South Carolina, marking an expansion of its commercial vehicle operations in North America. The plant, set to open in 2027, will manufacture both electric and internal combustion engine models, with an expected annual production capacity of 50,000 vehicles by 2030.
Isuzu said it will invest approximately $280 million in the facility, which will span 750,000 square meters in Greenville County. The company expects to create around 700 jobs by 2028. “We aim to expand our business in North America by promoting local sourcing of components required for the production of battery electric vehicles, for which demand is expected to grow over the medium to long term,” Isuzu said in a statement.

The factory will produce N-series trucks with battery-electric and gasoline powertrains, as well as F-series models with diesel engines. The N-series, widely used for light commercial applications, has a gross vehicle weight rating of up to 9.3 tonnes in North America. The F-series, designed for medium-duty transport, has a rating of 15 tonnes.
Isuzu noted that the facility will feature a conveyor-free production system aimed at increasing flexibility and scalability. Automated inspection processes will be implemented to enhance quality control.

The announcement follows Isuzu’s recent expansion in the U.S., including the launch of NRR-EV electric truck production in Charlotte, Michigan, in September 2024. The NRR-EV offers battery configurations ranging from 60 kWh to 180 kWh to accommodate varying range requirements.
