The Irvine Police Department (IPD) has purchased a Tesla Cybertruck for its fleet, not for traditional patrol duties but to foster positive interactions between officers and the community.

The unusual move, likened to police arriving on horseback or with K9 units, is meant to spark conversations and enhance community engagement.

However, the U.S. portal Electrek raised the question of whether a vehicle costing around $100,000 is necessary for initiating conversations. Critics are questioning if such a large investment is appropriate, with some doubting that the Cybertruck delivers a welcoming, approachable image for community outreach. “It doesn’t exactly give off the ‘feel free to approach and talk to me’ vibe,” remarked one observer.

In response, the Irvine Police Department explained the Cybertruck’s role, stating, “The truck will support our Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program and community outreach efforts. While the fully equipped vehicle won’t be used as a patrol car, it can respond to emergencies and assist the community when needed.” IPD emphasized its goal to explore innovative ways to connect with Irvine’s youth, likening the truck to other conversation starters such as mounted officers and K9 units.

The Cybertruck, converted into a police vehicle by UP.FIT, a division of Unplugged Performance, features modifications to suit law enforcement needs, including a roof-mounted lighting system and remote-operated spotlight. “We’re thrilled to partner with the Irvine Police Department to debut the nation’s first official on-duty Cybertruck for their DARE program,” said Ben Schaffer, CEO of Unplugged Performance.
