Ireland to Install 17 New High-Power Charging Hubs Nationwide by End of 2025

The Irish government has announced plans to fund the installation of 17 new high-power charging hubs along the National Road Network, with a total of 131 new High-Power Charging (HPC) points set to be installed across the country.

According to the Irish Ministry of Transport, the new hubs are scheduled for completion by the end of 2025. While specific power details for each hub have not been disclosed, the Ministry stated, “Each of these recharging pools provides banks of Fast and Ultra-Fast recharging points, so that people can charge their EVs quickly.” The Ministry also mentioned that the total charging capacity for the 13 EV charging points being installed amounts to “24,260 kilowatts (24 megawatts).” However, exact capacity per individual charger remains unspecified due to the variety of charger types.

The new chargers will be funded under the first EV Charging Infrastructure LDV (Light Duty Vehicle) En-Route Grant Scheme, administered by Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI). Private businesses will handle the installation and operation of the chargers. The grant will cover up to 60 percent of eligible costs, including construction, installation, upgrades, and associated civil engineering works, as well as Local Authority development consent fees.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to expand Ireland’s network of EV charging stations. The Ministry has indicated that a second grant scheme focused on national roads is expected to be announced later this year.

Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan commented, “We will follow it up with many other schemes to ensure people know that they can charge their cars easily.” He added, “This will complement our other commitments such as the EV purchase grant scheme, which will remain unchanged again next year, our grants for home chargers and the continued VRT reduction for EVs. Add this to the greater choice and price competitiveness on the market, we hope more and more people will be encouraged to choose electric.”
