Electric vehicle (EV) charging joint venture Ionna said it will partner with Wawa, a U.S. convenience store and fuel retailer, to expand its high-power charging network across Florida. The first site under the collaboration is scheduled to open next week in Daytona Beach.

Additional installations are underway at Wawa locations in Bradenton, Pensacola, and Orlando, as Ionna continues efforts to scale its charging infrastructure in the United States. The joint venture, formed by eight major automakers including BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota, aims to deploy more than 30,000 charging bays by the end of the decade.

Ionna did not specify how many Wawa sites would ultimately be equipped with chargers or how many charge points each location will offer. However, the Daytona Beach launch will bring the company’s total to 212 operational bays and 3,064 contracted bays.

“That is over 10% contracted to our 2030 live bay goal in just over a year,” said Ionna CEO Seth Cutler.

The Wawa agreement marks Ionna’s largest EV charging commitment to date, though further details were not disclosed. Wawa, which operates over 1,000 stores across 12 U.S. states, will host the chargers at sites that will include canopies and Alpitronic’s Hypercharger HYC400 units, capable of delivering up to 400 kW and supporting both CCS and NACS connectors.

“With an ongoing commitment to providing our customers with speed and convenience, our new collaboration with Ionna does just that,” said Rich Makin, Chief Fuel Officer at Wawa. “As we continue to expand our EV services, we are thrilled to provide our customers with a one-stop for fresh food, beverages and EV charging.”

Ionna opened its first Rechargery site earlier this year in South Carolina and is working to exceed 1,000 installed EV charging points by the end of 2025.
