Saldivar’s Trucking has become the first independent owner-operator in the U.S. to deploy a Volvo VNR Electric Class 8 truck, signaling a shift in the heavy truck market, where smaller fleets have been hesitant to transition from diesel to electric. The milestone demonstrates the growing accessibility of battery-electric trucks for owner-operators through funding programs and dealer support.
The move was facilitated by TEC Equipment, a Volvo Trucks dealership, in collaboration with the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Together, they secured $410,000 in funding from California’s On-Road Heavy-Duty Voucher Incentive Program (HVIP). This program, aimed at small fleets of 10 or fewer vehicles operating in California, helps offset the higher upfront costs of zero-emission vehicles and replace older, polluting trucks.
“TEC Equipment has been instrumental in supporting owner-operators like Saldivar’s Trucking through the transition to battery-electric vehicles,” said Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “Their dedication to providing comprehensive support and securing necessary funding demonstrates how crucial dealer partners are in turning the vision of owning a battery-electric vehicle into a reality for fleets of all sizes.”
Saldivar’s Volvo VNR Electric is equipped with a six-battery configuration, delivering 565 kWh of energy storage and a 250 kW charging capability. The truck can charge to 80% in just 90 minutes, offering a range of up to 275 miles. It is well-suited for Saldivar’s operational needs, which include nightly routes at California ports covering 175-200 miles.
The deployment of this truck underscores the importance of partnerships in addressing the financial and operational challenges faced by smaller fleets. As Peter Voorhoeve noted, “Nearly half of the 3.5 million professional truck drivers in the U.S. are owner-operators. These small operations face unique challenges, from the initial capital investment to securing adequate charging infrastructure. This collaboration showcases the vital role of truck dealers and the need for stakeholders to work together in advancing sustainable transportation.”
Saldivar’s adoption of the Volvo VNR Electric not only supports their business operations but also serves as a model for other owner-operators considering a shift to zero-emission trucking solutions.
