IMC’s move towards hydrogen trucks marks a significant step in its sustainability efforts. The company’s order for 50 units from Nikola includes the delivery of ten trucks in the fourth quarter of 2023, with an additional ten to follow this month. The remaining 30 fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are expected to be delivered by the end of 2024, with Tomās Truck Centres acting as the dealer.
Jim Gillis, IMC Pacific Region President, expressed the company’s commitment to sustainable drayage, stating, “At IMC, we believe in the power of sustainable drayage to drive positive change for the environment. Our blended approach to investing in both electric and hydrogen gives us the best of both technologies. Weāre proud to lead the charge in sustainable drayage solutions.”
Nikola President and CEO Steve Girsky praised IMC’s vision for transitioning its fleet to zero emissions, saying, “Nikola is proud to be at the forefront of sustainable transportation alongside IMC. Their vision to transition their fleet to zero-emissions is a testament to their leadership in the drayage sector and sets a high standard for the industry. Weāre honored to be aligned with them as we all work to decarbonize the industry.”
Despite recent challenges, including a recall of all 209 battery-electric trucks and a shift in strategic focus back to hydrogen models, Nikola remains committed to advancing sustainable transportation solutions. Steve Girsky, the fourth CEO of Nikola in four years, continues to lead the company’s efforts towards decarbonization in the transportation industry.
