Hyundai’s Ioniq 5, which received the automaker’s first N-brand treatment, is now set to undergo a rugged, off-road XRT upgrade. This development raises questions about how it will stack up against Rivian’s recently unveiled R3X.

The refreshed Ioniq 5, revealed earlier this month, boasts several design enhancements, a larger battery with increased range, and a newly added rear wiper.

In Korea, Hyundai has augmented the new Ioniq 5 with an additional 7 kWh of battery capacity, bringing the total to 84 kWh. This upgrade extends the EV’s range to 485 km (301 mi), up from 458 km (285 mi) previously.

Internally, the Ioniq 5 now features additional USB-C ports and several repositioned buttons and features for enhanced convenience. A significant addition is Hyundai’s Connected Car Navigation Cockpit, which includes Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

Although the new Ioniq 5 has yet to debut in the US, prices have remained largely unchanged in Korea, hovering around 52,400,000 KRW ($39,400).

In the US, the 2024 Ioniq 5 starts at $41,800, with Hyundai offering substantial incentives such as a $7,500 EV lease bonus and rare 0% APR financing.

Hyundai also announced that its inaugural N brand performance EV, the Ioniq 5 N, will commence at $66,100 (excluding destination).

Recent reports suggest Hyundai is gearing up to introduce a rugged XRT variant in North America. A new prototype was reportedly sighted undergoing testing, featuring a fully camouflaged exterior, redesigned rear bumper, and new front parking sensors. The front bumper also appears distinct from the current or updated Ioniq 5 models.

While Hyundai has yet to confirm details, it is speculated that the Ioniq 5 XRT will include enhancements to enhance efficiency and range. The rugged EV is not expected to launch in Korea before summer, but European and US models could debut by the end of 2024.

The comparison with Rivian’s R3X is particularly intriguing. Rivian’s design draws inspiration from legendary rally cars like Audi and Lancia, blending iconic elements with a modern touch.
