Hyundai Motor Group’s Kia and Hyundai Motor brands have entered a strategic partnership with Samsung Electronics to develop an open ecosystem that connects vehicles with smart home devices and smartphones. The agreement, signed at Samsung Electronics’ Seoul R&D Campus, focuses on preparing for the era of software-defined vehicles (SDVs).
Under the partnership, Hyundai and Kia aim to enhance in-vehicle services by leveraging Samsung’s technology. In return, Samsung will work to link its smart home devices and phones with Hyundai and Kia vehicles, allowing seamless integration. The next-generation infotainment system developed by Hyundai and Kia will be connected to Samsung’s SmartThings platform, enabling new features for drivers.
Chang Song, President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group’s Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) Division, emphasized the benefits of the collaboration. “Our goal is to enrich Hyundai Motor and Kia customers’ mobility experience by offering personalized services that extend beyond transportation, seamlessly integrating vehicles with smartphones,” he said.
The first major feature of the new system is a global location solution that allows drivers to track their vehicles from anywhere using a Samsung Galaxy phone. Through a Quick Panel on their devices, Galaxy users will also be able to control vehicle functions like air conditioning and check the range of their Hyundai or Kia. Conversely, drivers will be able to manage Samsung SmartThings-enabled home devices, such as air conditioners and air purifiers, directly from their vehicles.
Samsung plans to expand the SmartThings platform further by introducing in-vehicle health monitoring via Galaxy devices and wearables, along with pet care solutions and smart apartment integrations. “Through our collaboration with Hyundai and Kia, customers will experience the convenience of SmartThings not only at home but also in their vehicles,” noted Paul (Kyungwhoon) Cheun, President and CTO of Samsung Electronics.
