Hyundai Motor partners with Advent Technologies to advance high-temperature fuel cell technology

Hyundai Motor has recently announced a joint development agreement with Advent Technologies, a US-based company that specializes in developing, manufacturing, and assembling complete fuel cell systems. The agreement comes after a successful fuel cell technology assessment, which evaluated Advent’s proprietary Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) technology for supplying Hyundai’s high-temperature fuel cell needs.

The joint development agreement will focus on further developing and assessing Advent’s advanced fuel cell technology, specifically the HMC-Advent Ion Pair membrane electrode assembly (MEA), for use in Hyundai’s heavy-duty and stationary applications. The partners will also introduce advanced cooling technologies for mobility high-temperature proton exchange membrane (HT-PEM) fuel cell stacks.

According to Seung Hyun Hong, Vice President and Head of the Material Research & Engineering Center at Hyundai Motor Company, the joint development aims to “revolutionize the global MEA market by providing significant improvement in lifetime and an increase in power density versus current HT-PEM MEAs.” He added that this development will enable the company to develop best-in-class high-temperature fuel cells, unlocking a key step for more widespread adoption of fuel cell technology in high-temperature applications.

Dr. Vasilis Gregoriou, Chairman, and CEO of Advent Technologies, expressed his excitement about the partnership, saying, “With our common goal to decarbonize heavy-duty transport, we are committed to contributing to Hyundai’s goal of building innovative, high-performance fuel cell solutions.”
