Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 Seen Testing Native NACS Charging Ports

Recent sightings of Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 and Kia’s EV6 vehicles at a Supercharger station using native NACS ports instead of adapters suggest progress in the development of native NACS support for these models.

The vehicles were spotted at a Supercharger station equipped with a Magic Dock in Ypsilanti, Michigan, by automotive journalist Sam Abuelsamid. Both vehicles, camouflaged during testing, were observed connected directly to the regular Supercharger plug.

This development indicates Hyundai and Kia’s potential move towards integrating native NACS compatibility earlier than initially planned. While many automakers have prioritized distributing adapters first, Hyundai and Kia had previously announced intentions to introduce native ports by the end of 2024, with adapters following in early 2025.

The transition reflects Hyundai and Kia’s efforts to enhance EV infrastructure compatibility amid ongoing industry developments, including recent changes within Tesla’s Supercharger team.

Tesla’s current NACS website lists support for Supercharging via adapters for Ford and Rivian, with plans for additional automakers like GM, Volvo, Polestar, and Mercedes-Benz. Hyundai and Kia are not currently listed for adapter support, suggesting they may opt for a direct integration approach.

Analysts note that this move could bolster Hyundai and Kia’s competitiveness in the EV market, where both brands have been expanding their electric vehicle offerings.

Further updates are expected as Hyundai and Kia continue testing and refining their native NACS capabilities.
