Hyundai Motors is gearing up to revolutionize electric vehicle (EV) charging times with its upcoming dedicated EV platforms, aiming to cut slow-charging durations by half compared to current levels, according to its latest sustainability report.

The South Korean automaker plans to introduce the ‘eM’ platform for passenger EVs and an ‘eS’ platform for Purpose-Built Vehicles (PBVs), promising significant enhancements in battery capacity and motor output alongside faster AC charging capabilities.

“Our goal is to achieve a 50% reduction in slow-charging time with our next-generation platforms,” Hyundai stated in its sustainability report. The company envisions future EVs, such as the anticipated Genesis GV90, benefiting from these advancements, potentially reducing AC charging times from hours to under four hours.

By accelerating AC charging speeds, Hyundai aims to streamline EV ownership, allowing drivers to charge their vehicles efficiently during office hours and reducing reliance on more expensive and grid-intensive DC chargers. This strategic shift aligns with global trends focusing on enhancing AC charging infrastructure to benefit the broader EV ecosystem.

Hyundai’s innovative approach also includes advancements in battery technology, with plans to introduce cell-to-module battery packs offering superior energy density compared to current models based on the Electronic Modular Platform (E-GMP). Additionally, the adoption of LFP cells in certain models aims to optimize pricing competitiveness.

The eM platform is set to cover a wide range of vehicle segments, from B to E models, and is expected to underpin several mainstream EVs and luxury offerings under the Genesis brand by 2030. Hyundai’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup underscores its strategic pivot towards sustainable mobility solutions.
